Who is the European bison? The largest mammal in Europe in the Białowieża Forest

The European bison is the largest land mammal in Europe. The animal, weighing up to a ton, moves with grace, and its presence in Białowieża is a symbol of survival and nature conservation. They roam the Białowieża forests in herds led by females, but solitary bulls, especially in winter, often approach human settlements. Tatanka House is one of the places where you can observe them up close.

Bisons in action – spectacular bullfight

Nature can surprise with its wildness, and one of the most spectacular shows in the Białowieża Forest is a bison fight. Guests of the Tatanka House had the opportunity to observe an extraordinary scene in the meadow in front of the house - two powerful bulls faced each other in a clash that was a show of strength and dominance.

Bulls fight most often during the rutting season, competing for territory or leadership. Their massive bodies would thud against each other, their hooves kicking up the earth, adding drama to the whole spectacle. The fight lasted several minutes, and then the winner calmly walked away, leaving the defeated in the shade of the oaks.

It was a moment that will remain in the memory of those watching the scene from the windows of the house. Thanks to such close contact with nature, Tatanka becomes a place that not only offers relaxation, but also allows you to witness wild, unusual events.

How did the bison return to the Białowieża Forest?

A hundred years ago, bison were on the verge of extinction. As a result of intensive hunting and loss of habitat, their numbers dropped to zero in the wild. Thanks to the efforts of naturalists and reintroduction projects, bison returned to Białowieża. The first individuals were brought here in the 1920s, and today the population of these majestic creatures is growing, giving hope for their survival.

The European bison is not only an icon of Polish nature, but also a symbol of environmental protection. Its presence in the Białowieża Forest reminds us of the need to take care of wildlife and maintain the balance between man and nature.
